The fool symbolizes new beginnings, freedom, innocence, idealism, spontaneity, and adventure. However, if the card is upside down, it represents the flip side of these qualities: recklessness, naivety, negligence, and thoughtlessness.
In most illustrations, this is depicted by a young man walking carelessly along a cliff, his dog warning him in vain of the impending danger. In my version, the fool himself is a young person with appropriate makeup and gestures – cheeky and reckless. The dog itself represents the looming danger, and if the card is upside down, this danger appears all the more inescapable.
