The Hierophant is a very classic, very Christian-inspired depiction. Unlike the High Priestess, there isn't much room for interpretation here, and of course, I fully embraced the Catholic tradition. One of his hands is in the same pose as that of the Magician, "as above, so below." In the other, he holds a staff with three crosses at the top, representing the Holy Trinity.
The Hierophant, when upright, represents convention. As one would expect from the Church, he suggests that you follow established paths. Instead of being innovative, you should stick to what is established and has worked so far.
Upside down, the Hierophant is a sign that you feel restricted by old structures and conventions. It symbolizes a certain powerlessness that comes with this type of control and shows that you have a need to break free from it.
